Blair Witch Sequel Disappoints, Director and Writer Joke About It

The Blair Witch Project sequel Blair Witch hit theaters on Friday and it did not scare up a huge showing. The horror movie disappointed, pulling in an estimated $9.7 million in the Friday-Sunday window in the United States, according to Entertainment Weekly.

The movie’s director and writer seem to be taking the shortfall in stride, joking about the poor performance on Twitter today. “Bro, I told you we shoulda made that movie about the boring guy who landed a plane in water instead,” director Adam Wingard joked in an exchange with writer Simon Barrett.

That’s a reference to the Clint Eastwood-directed Tom Hanks movie, Sully, which opened at No. 1 last weekend and stayed on top this weekend with $22 million.

Barrett had a take of his own, joking, “Well, our horror film may have been a disappointment at the box office this weekend, but at least we got overwhelmingly negative reviews.”

The writer went on to clarify that he is “hugely proud” of Blair Witch.

Wingard and Barrett are obviously joking about all of this. At the same time, it must sting a bit that Blair Witch did not apparently capture anywhere near the audience as the 1999 original–though that was never likely to happen anyway.
