Metroid is a relatively simple-looking game by today’s standards, but it manages to convey a lot about its world and atmosphere through its moody, sometimes ominous music. One musician has taken that original game’s music and remade it with analog synths.
YouTuber Luminist has posted four remade songs, with the Brinstar theme being the latest. Other songs they’ve done include the Title Theme, Kraid’s Lair, and Samus Fanfare. You can listen to Brinstar in the video below or check out the rest on their YouTube channel.
“I wanted to find out what the original NES Metroid soundtrack would be like if it was remade with REAL synths, 80s style,” Luminist wrote in the video’s description. “All sounds were generated with a Korg MS20 Mini, then processed with some juicy studio effects to make things more atmospheric.”
The redone Metroid music sounds like it’s from an ’80s film adaptation that never saw the light of day. It reminds us of the Netflix series Stranger Things, which also features heavy use of synths in its soundtrack, and makes us want a move or series based on Metroid–perhaps starring Ronda Rousey, who said she wants to play Samus in a movie.
These covers are awesome, but as far as video games go, Samus hasn’t seen a proper adventure in quite some time. The last mainline game, Metroid: Other M, released in 2010. Metroid Prime: Federation Force launched on 3DS earlier this year and only featured a cameo of Samus. Critically, it was not well-received, garnering a 5/10 in GameSpot’s review.
