The weekend box office numbers are in, and, unsurprisingly, Captain America: Civil War was the highest-grossing movie at the United States box office for the Friday-Sunday period.
It pulled in $181.1 million, in line with estimates, to become the fifth highest opening in US box office history, according to Deadline.
Civil War took in $61 million on Saturday, beating the $56.5 million that The Avengers: Age of Ultron‘s took in on its second day in 2015. Globally, Civil War is expected to reach $678 million this weekend.
Deadline says a $1 billion worldwide take is “definitely within shot.” By comparison, the last Captain America movie, Winter Soldier, made around $700 million worldwide.
Disney is having a big year. With Civil War‘s box office numbers accounted for, along with cumulative US totals for The Jungle Book and Zootopia, the company has now made more than $1 billion at the US box office this year. This feat was achieved after 128 days, beating last year’s record of 165 days.
As mentioned, Civil War had the fifth strongest US opening ever, pushing Iron Man 3 ($174.1 million) down to No. 6. It remains behind The Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million), The Avengers ($207.4 million), Jurassic World ($208.8 million), and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($247.9 million)–via Box Office Mojo.
