The title may sound a bit like an early April Fool’s joke, but the Final Fantasy series is making its streaming television debut with a new show called Final Fantasy XIV: Daddy of Light. The Japanese TV drama, originally called Final Fantasy XIV: Hikari no Otousan in Japanese, premieres in April in Japan and will be available worldwide on Netflix this fall. The show is a mix of live-action scenes and in-game footage. It’s a classic father and son story with a very modern twist: the son gives his dad a copy of Final Fantasy XIV for PlayStation 4. As the dad starts to play, his son joins him online, helping his father through the game but not revealing his true identity. Meanwhile, the son writes a blog detailing his experiences secretly reconnecting with his father.
Final Fantasy XIV: Hikari no Otousan premieres on Japanese TV and on Netflix in Japan in April. The show will hit Netflix worldwide this fall, according to its official Twitter account as translated by US Gamer. The show’s official website has now gone live.
Final Fantasy XIV, the game, was released as an MMO in 2010. Its initial release for PC was considered disappointing, as many technical issues, interface problems, and repetitive gameplay turned players off.
The game was revamped in 2013 as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for PC and PlayStation 3, righting many of the wrongs of the initial release. It came to PlayStation 4 in 2014, while the PS3 version is set to be retired this June with the release of a new expansion pack. Square Enix recently made changes to the game’s free trial, dropping its 14-day time limit.
